Document Previewer Change
April 28, 2022
In Discovery Search version 1.8 we fixed a long-standing issue where certain large documents do not preview properly and end up causing an error that can stop the tool altogether. This document outlines the change and how organizations can use and benefit from the new method.
Our solution changes some user functionality, in exchange for improved customization and stability in the product.
Changes users and admins can expect:
There is no longer a “Preview Anyway” button in the system
Admins can configure reviewPromptMaxByteSize manually to any size they determine is best for their users and organization as a whole:
We recommend increasing the reviewPromptMaxByteSize value, if most of your documents are larger than this value but still need previews within Discovery Search
We recommend decreasing the reviewPromptMaxByteSize value, if you encounter any errors or performance issues when showing document previews or when most documents are smaller than this value
The preview will now read “File is too large to preview” for files that have a size greater than the set reviewPromptMaxByteSize value. The “File is too large to preview” warning replaces the“Preview Anyway” button in earlier version of Discovery Search.
Users are still able to select the document name to open or preview when needed on any document of any size
The default size should be set to 10 MB == 10,000,000 Bytes
There was a bug discovered in the Discovery Search v1.8.0 release DISCO-930; where this value is incorrectly set to 0.5MB == 500,000 Bytes. This issue will be addressed in the next release to increase to the desired 10 MB value.)
Original error description:
The user finds a file that is larger than 50 MB
The user clicks to load the preview
The below error presents and renders the system unresponsive triggering the need for an entire relaunch
The user must exit and relaunch to continue their workflow
Summary:
Continuing to display the “Preview Anyway” button will create an opportunity for this error to continue to occur
Giving more control over the threshold of when to allow previews empowers each individual client to determine and set what works best for their teams and documents
Users can always click on the document title to see the document if needed in an appropriate workflow
