Why The Discrepancy Between The Catalog and File Information

Question:

There seems to be a discrepancy between the info displayed in the catalog overview from the “Overview” page, and when I go to “File Info” from the “Sources” page. For example, the Overview shows 1.9 TB for “EXAMPLE #1”, but the File info for that same drive is 1.7 TB. Which figure should I trust?

Answer:

The discrepancy between the figures displayed in the "Overview" page and the "File Info" page arises from the difference between Terabytes (TB) and Tebibytes (TiB). The catalog page shows Terabytes (1 TB = 1,000 GB, the general standard of reporting data volume) and the Dashboards page shows Tebibyte (1 Tib = 1024 GiB, the binary way). This would be similar to buying a buy a 1 TB hard drive (standard), it's only like 0.92 GB (binary).

Basically, 1.9 Terabytes equals 1.7 Tebibytes. They are both correct but represent the two different ways data volume is counted. In terms of reporting, you would generally use the 1.9 TB (Terabytes) as that is more common, but on a binary scale it would be 1.73 (approximately) TB (technically Tebibytes).
